If you could get over the weather, PHL is probably a good bet. Cost of living is very reasonable but you still get all the big city amenities and are well-connected to the rest of the East Coast. Personally, I adore CHI and to a lesser extent MSP, both well-connected cities... but the weather doesn't get any better in either of those cities.
