It CAN happen.

I can buy a Y fare and not select a seat.

Y fares are not allowed to be bumped, according to the CoC.

If all the other seats have been assigned, someone else will be bumped to get me on the flight.

Again, this is according to the COC, which I'm 99% sure says they won't bump full fare passengers.
