I'm a former US Navy diver and think that generally, the surface conditions, and just how arduous and difficult they are for search, let alone trying to grab and load something, are being grossly underestimated. The joy of dropping below the wave action though is that it goes from total chaos to calm. Of course the surface tenders have to endure topside conditions, but it may actually be easier to pull the blackboxes up from the bottom than it will be to pick up a piece of floating wreckage.
Exactly. It's calm below, but launching and recovering AUVs and ROVs in those conditions beats them <redacted>. The best heave compensated crane can't keep up with the conditions in this region. It's going to be interesting seeing what happens. There won't be anything going on below until they locate some surface debris.
