I have been flying in/out of YVR for 14 years, and it is always changing.

One big switch a few years ago was moving security before the customs preclearance area. At first I didn't like it, but I think it works better. I rarely see huge lines at the preclearance area these days as security seems to provide a metering effect.

They do have intl -> US connections (based on airline participation and arrival time) where you can go directly from your flight to the US Security and Customs preclearance area rather than have to enter Canada and pick up your bags.

They also have newish passport machines in the US Customs preclearance area now.
