That's because you are doing it the wrong way. Whenever I visit family in the states, I grab a litre of Tanqueray, for around 20 USD compared to around £30 here. (It is stronger too!) Something you can never have too much of around the house.
Even if you live in the states, sometimes wines/liquors can be cheaper in Europe than in America. Or simply not available in America.
