If the stickers cleared first, then I would expect that you are committed to the upgrade. If you have called in first and done miles & co-pay then they should not deduct stickers.
All that said, you may be able to ask for the stickers to be re-instated and use miles + co-pay but I don't know how good your chances are there. I don't read all threads on FT but I don't think I've read about this situation before.
I think my best chance is to contact the AA customer service after the trip and ask them to give me 4 stickers. It can be too difficult to fix the issue in my favor by reissuing the ticket for the third time (yes, that would be the third one, and, yes, only because of the upgrades). A "one-time favor" could be easier to dispense.
