They send our son (he's six) a birthday postcard.

That's it, (for benefits) as far as I can tell.

However, the points are slowly accumulating (I often buy his tickets on points and pay mine with cash -- business expense, of course), and he will soon be eligible for a shorthaul reward ticket.
