I use LINE (like Whatsapp & Viber). It's the most popular in Thailand, and I guess also in Japan where it's from.

I have a subscription to SkyPe that allows unlimited calls, but SkyPe quality is terrible

Line is clear as a bell, and free. They also have video calls although I haven't used it internationally yet.
