Data point. I applied this morning for the Preferred card and was approved instantly. My wife applied soon after and got a "pending further review" response. Her income and FICO are both higher than mine. No debts for either of us. I have a PGC for which I just paid the new annual fee which was due. My wife has a Mer.Benz Platinum for which the annual fee is now due but which she has not yet paid. Wonder if her AF having not yet been paid on the Plat had anything to do with the decision. She only has one other AMEX card, a Hilton. Also, is there a reconsideration number to call to avoid waiting 14 days?

UPDATE: Found the online site to check my wife's application status and it says she's approved. Just a few minutes after being notified it was pending further review. So maybe it initially was given "under review" status because because it came from the same email address as mine and on the same day? Or just a quirk in the system? I still would like your thoughts on the AF questions I raised.
Same thing with my application. I hit submit and got the 'under review' page letting me know id know something in a week or so. It had a link to view the status of my application which i clicked on and it brought me to a page saying i had been approved, which was instantly followed by an email letting me know i was approved as well.
UPDATE: Called in to ask about the card, confirmed I AM eligible for the 15,000 bonus offer with the $1k over 3mo offer. Card was mailed today when it was approved USPS so 7-10 days, which does kinda suck as im out of town thursday for 6 days so wont get it till im back. Limit of $5k.
