You can not confirm an earlier ferry ? It must be standby ?
You're probably right as I was surprised of the big number of people standby on my not that full ferry during week day.

By the way, there is no immigration card needed in Macau. There is an immigration card needed when you're back in HK
A ticket booked on a later sailing cannot be changed to an earlier sailing on a "confirmed" basis but standby for earlier sailings based on availability is allowed at no charge.

Depending on the day of the year, the "night" sailing starts with the 5:15PM or 5:45PM or 6:15PM. I don't think anyone on a day trip from Hong Kong will return earlier than those times.
