The so-called "black box" (CVR and FDR) will ultimately reveal much of what went on. But at ~3,500 meters / ~11,500 feet it is twice as deep as the oh-so-tricky AF447 "black box" that tool 23 months to recover; the US TPL (Towed Pinger Locator) will be installed on the HMAS Ocean Shield when it arrives in Perth 28 March, it is expected to arrive on station (weather allowing) o/a 6 April and the "black box" pinger is only expected to have power through ~8 April.
AF447 wreckage was recovered from a depth of about 4000 meters.
