The work-around for US elites is to wait for the upgrade windows to start opening and grab either a preferred or exit row seat when they open up because the previous occupant got upgraded (assuming the elite doesn't get upgraded). Not sure how, or even if, that would work for you booking a day or two prior to departure.

It certainly didn't. First was sold out. It was either pay an extra 89 dollars for an aisle seat or take a middle seat. Took a middle seat. They don't even offer you a free snack. They wouldn't even hang my suit on the bulkhead when I asked (I was flying last minute to a funeral!). She told me I had to "stuff it" in an overhead bin. Very bad experience with surly FAs.
