Believe it or not I don't experience many of these situations (last one being in 2009) so I thought I should ask first before proceeding with seeking compensation.
It was UA's mx that caused your misconnect. They will probably give you miles if you ask.
Were you at the gate at NRT 30 minutes prior to departure?
