Your itinerary doesn't really include any northern Honshu stops, but September / October was my favorite time of the year in the Tohoku. It's cool and generally a little rain here and there, but if you catch a good weather spell, it's incredible. Lake Towada is postcard perfect that time of the year. Hirosaki Castle is more of a sight during cherry blossom season, but still beautiful no less.

What I'd like to know is, what should we plan to pack for the northern parts of Honshu? We'll be in the high country, in the foothills of the Japanese Alps for over a week. Our trip starts in late-October in Tokyo but ends in December in Nagasaki. What should we expect from the various climates and temperatures?
