One last remark re: this subject as the treat is about upgrades.
The first transatlantic flight in Business was for me in 1986 with KLM from AMS via JFK to Charlotte. I remember (as a inexperienced traveller) my visit to the Rembrant lounge on the return flight very vividly. The delft blue tiles at the fire place but also that the boarding procedure where KLM staff member told everybody it was boarding time and a special door was opened allowing all passengers to board the plane with only 3 to 4 footsteps outside the lounge. It was a truly remarkable experience for me.
Furthermore I did not know I was – later - part of such a select group of Courtesy cardholders of only 2.000!!
PS:
The KLM Business Class seats where in these days awfull, So not everything was better in 'the old days'.
