When dialing a number, there are 2 buttons on the screen to initiate the call, one for each sim. Same when composing a text message.

One small thing to remember, only the sim in "Slot 1" is capable of 3g HSDPA+ data speeds... Sim 2 is limited to 2g data speeds, so you have to consider this when deciding which sim goes where. You can switch data between sims with a quick menu selector, so it's really very convenient.

Dual SIM, dual standby = 1 call active, the other SIM no longer active; until a call is received both SIMs are on standby.
Dual SIM, dual active = both SIMs fully active and able to receive calls at the same time.
