I know someone who had only one name - typical in some African cultures. He refused to change it for many years out of pride and respect for his heritage. But in the end he doubled his name (e.g went from Jones to Jones Jones) as the hassle was getting to much.
Interesting I had never thought about this. I had a classmate in college who had only a single name. The grading system couldn't handle it so they entered her last name just as a '.'
I never thought to ask her how the DMV or other government offices handled it
