Assuming you are talking about award booking, there are no stopovers allowed. Each flight is charged separately so if you flew from New York to Madrid to Barcelona you'd be charged the miles required for New York to Madrid and separately additional miles for Madrid to Barcelona. It doesn't matter whether you connect straight through or have a stopover in Madrid.

Open jaws can most easily be done by booking 2 one-ways.
