The aircraft passed over an area of Malaysia/Thailand which doesn't have very good radar coverage and could have done the same afterwards - evading areas with good radar coverage. I agree with you that the idea of a 777 hopping over mountains is quite ridiculous, I wasn't thinking in terms of that at all.
