If you don''t want to order a special meal, I'd ask them to put a note on your booking and also mention it at checkin/bag drop.
I quite agree that this is the problem, hence my post. In the past a number of my op-ups have occurred a day before the flight, whilst it was being edited. Therefore by the time I know anything of it, the exit row seats will indeed have been lost.
