Then again I'm not a huge fan either of lithium ion batteries catching fire without any clear reason, or numerous incidents fuel leaks in-flight, or faulty wiring in the vicinity of one of the numerous lithium-ion batteries, or the fact that a brand-new airplane lost an 8 ft by 4 ft fairing from its underbelly (AI 787 10/15/2013), or the fact that a majority of the 787 fleet now in service has reported hairline cracks in the wing structure, etc.
The point is not to pick on the 787, as any new aircraft will experience "teething" pains, but simply that whether a plane is new or old is no guarantee
per se of safety and reliability.
