I believe "Upgrade elite->biz Z" also works as Economy -> Business for Star Alliance upgrades since Elite does not exist in the Star Alliance award structure.

So, they no longer use the booking class to distinguish between origin (e.g. North America vs. Asia), TPE O&D (e.g. it used to be a different class if you transitted at TPE vs. originating/terminating at TPE), etc...? At one point, they did this and I suppose that was during the simpler days.
