ADS-B generates the data transmitted by the transponder, when people talk of the transponder this is in effect ADS-B. It is not something an airline subscribes to it is a required piece of equipment for all airlines and supplies height, heading, speed, location and identity infomation to the radar operators and anyone with an ADS-B receiver.
Can someone else confirm this as my reading of the wiki shows they are two separate systems.
