It's 12,500 miles one way and it's pretty tough to get a gate agent to process it if it doesn't clear in advance. Unlike SWUs, GUCs or RUCs they don't automatically populate on the airport standby list. Maybe I'm an optimist but I feel like sometime soon mileage upgrades will be able to be processed at the gate just like SWUs, GUCs and RUCs currently are. As always with DL a good agent can do it, a normal one probably not.
