Wondering if iPhone users go with Face Time or Skype to interact with family when traveling abroad, specifically Europe?

Would iPad or iPhone be preferable for this purpose? And if you are using iPad--is it the kind with cellular or do you rely on hotel wi-fi?

Trying to gear up appropriately for European trip where daily video chats with family will be necessary. Could also use my Macbook, but it would restrict me to hotel wifi. Any recommendations for what works best and is most economical? (I currently have Macbook, iPad non-cellular, and considering springing for iPhone)

Also, If you know of a great data plan (T Mobile says unlimited data and wifi abroad, Verizon charges extra but says T Mobile isn't as good, etc), I'd love to know what you're using. Thanks! (and sorry if this is duplicate, I did search topic before posting)
