Maybe your refund will be both larger and easier than you expect. I've usually found AA rather good at refunds subsequent to flight cancellation.
I didn't make it clear, but in this case the ticketing carrier was LAN. Hence, their customer (dis)service is the final arbiter. AA was not especially useful.
The real question is if I ask for ORC (original routing credit), will I get it? Unlikely.
