Unless you live outside the US when 1K can be had for less than that and be done in five trips of three days each (if you're brave enough to ride 20K miles back to back in E+).
That said I was comped UA-silver through Marriott and was at 1 of 2 in terms of upgrades including companion upgrade on that occasion las year (I understand I was extremely lucky). I will make Gold by mid-April hopefully, so it will be interesting to see if I can score another upgrade of that sort with the next two flights after that...
