E+, UA upgrade, and UA Lounge for international are G, but *A Lounge access is for *G. It appears the original comments combined both.
As Baze mentioned, domestic upgrade is a nice to have, but benefits when traveling internationally is the true value of G/*G. Anyone who travels internationally should recognize the value of *G status that comes with UA Gold. In addition to international Lounge access, the value of *G check in line and *G during IRROPS on *A partners is extremely valuable, a lot more valuable than when flying UA. *G can access LH and LX First Class lines at check in and customer service lines.
