That must be what I was thinking.
I've seen signs at specific counters (SYR comes to mind) stating they cannot be used, so maybe it is a location specific policy. (I know Avis has that policy - each location can set their own policy on debit use. The local counter I used up until last year didn't take them.)
OP should call the renting location and inquire to be sure.
