A similar situation has happened to me before and they kept the checked bag overnight (< 24 hr connection). Just make sure that when you drop off your checked bags on your first leg, you see the connecting flight on the tag.
If they're unwilling, the worst that you'll have to do is to pick it up and store it at left baggage (lockers are available too, I think).
