Based on a speed of Mach 0.84 (based off http://www.askcaptainlim.com/flying-...airliners.html, where would we be without Air Asia?!) and a further minimising of about 30% due to turning and possible less than cruising speed you can make a doughnut of 4,200-6,000km from the last known position, masking this to just the region of the final ping gives you something a bit more specific (albeit completely speculatory)

You just would need to add a [ before the 'urll' and 'img'?

Furthermore would it be possible for the pilot (or whomever was in control) to minimise fuel consumption somehow? Say by shutting off two of the engines?
