I stand corrected. Granted my experiences with these cases have all involved Asian and EU airlines. I ve spent a fair few nights at airport hotels I didn't care for, once on account of a typhoon.
Not really surprised north American carriers do jack all. One need only look at the best airline in north america to figure out how low standards are. Seems low expectations go with them too - now that we have commentators (reasonably and pragmatically, I might add) suggesting that pax should learn how to sort these things out because its quite likely that the airline hasn't trained its staff on how to do it.
