When travelling solo, I prefer the couchsurfing experience over staying at a hostel -- big city or small. I prefer couchsurfing for the more personal, cultural exchange. Usually I resort to hostels when it's last minute and I'm unable to find a CS host. Hostels can be great to meet other travellers from around the world, and often times the hostel will have various programs and activities available during your stay.
