I remember the days when that service and champagne were offered on international flights in first on United.

It was a long time ago.

Family member is a flight attendant on US Airways and works the flights to Europe out of PHL. She tells me that when they started charging for drinks in economy, consumption dropped over 80%.

The airline no longer loses money giving it away and no longer boards as much so there is the weight savings from not carrying it in the first place.
