No. AA awards permit connections in both zones of travel (subject to published through-fare routing rules). However, since AA awards do not permit stopovers outside of North America, an extra 10K miles would be required for LON-IST if one stayed in LON for 24 hours or more.
So, using London as a "transit" airport (in London less than 24 hrs) to Istanbul, for example, would still keep someone on the 20,000 North America to Europe benefit?
