4. If #2 is correct, I don't know if I made a mistake purely from an upgrade/status perspective. If putting my miles on AA would allow me to get upgrades on both Cathay and AA and allow me premium boarding status on AA flights when I fly AA domestically, perhaps I made a mistake with my Marco Polo strategy.
Hoping someone can clarify, TIA

2 is wrong. With sufficient CX Asia miles (CP is the now bankrupted Canadian airlines "Canadian"), you can access award seats on AA,AS and US(after 30mar) for domestic us flights.
Kaka is right, and in all honesty, You have a 3 Part Question.
Mileage Redemption, Mileage Upgrade and Status
Redemption,
you really need to look at the Advantage and Asia Miles reward chart to see what's better for you.
We can't answer that, and we don't know what kind of awards you're planning to redeem.
Mileage Upgrade are restricted
So AA mile can upgrade AA operate flight and vice versa on CX.
No AA mileage-up on CX flights.
AA Emeralds get 8 Systemwide Upgrades a year and AA is starting DFW-HKG in Jun 2014.
How easy will those Systemwides clear, no one knows plus can you put up with AA Grandma's

They are not for everyone.
Let's see, JFK-HKG is 8059 Base
4x RT in Y+, so 8865 Miles per one way
That would put you at 70.9K Marco Polo, but don't forget the Silver reset.
or AA would be
8059 x 1.5 Elite Qualifying Points for Y+ fares = 12089 per One way
12089 x 8 One Way puts you at 96.7K EQP so very close to AA EXP.
or 8059 x 1 Elite Qualifying Miles = 64.5K EQP

If I use AA instead of Marco Polo for my mileage I will:
a) Be able to upgrade on CX JFK-HKG flights using my AA number.
b) Be able to upgrade on AA for US domestic flights using my AA number.
c) Have the same level of status on both AA and CX flights for early boarding.
Is that correct? Is there really therefore no advantage to someone living in the US to have a Marco Polo membership instead of an AA membership?
BJ
A) is not possible, so scrap that.
B) you can use stickers at as AA Sapphire or Comped Domestic as AA Emerald.
You can also use your Systemwides but that is a bit of a waste on domestic.
C) Both would give you early boarding and priority seating on both airlines.
The Advantage is dependent on your flight and travel patterns.
I say you really should talk to Cathay Boy since that route is his forte.
I'll be honest
I'm an AA Emerald guy but I am willing to put up with some AA TPAC.
If I was in your situation, I seriously don't know.
Your in one of those situation where you are somewhere in between CX Gold (Sapphire) or AA EXP (Emerald).
Benefits will always be best at your Home Carrier no Doubt.
If you were doing CX J on 4x, I would probably lean credit to AA
But since your in Y+, then it's a toss-up.
How much AA Domestic are you planning to do anyway?
And seriously, OP.
Don't fling your Elite Card (especially Green) and act all like all important and want top recognition.
You don't get treated like that unless you were a CX Diamond Plus, AA Concierge Key or UA Global Services.

Attach your tags to your nipples. That'll get the attention of the CX girls and guys at the gate. Wouldn't bank on a last minute upgrade mind.
