When I am unable to print a paper copy I still "print" to pdf so that I have the file saved on my laptop and/or phone and could print it out later if necessary. I try to do both this and also get the emailed mobile bps. I've had some issues similar to this and have found that having a boarding pass is always useful. A few weeks ago I had to use this pdf file on my phone in order to get through security and onto the plane. Luckily no one scrutinized it too closely as it was a full BP and not a mobile one.
But, printing a hard copy is always best.
