In general, 1016 certificates are like coupons and gone once used (usually clearly stated in the T&C). It's exactly the same as buying something at a grocery store with a coupon - if you return the item, they don't give you the coupon back.

Travel credit vouchers, on the other hand, can be refunded on cancellation.
