However, it's worth trying to be rational in your approach to spending this sort of money.
If you think that it's good value to spend a couple of thousand pounds for the pleasure of a continuous stream of airline flying (bearing in mind that many of these cheap fares do not allow stopovers, so it's quite hard to arrange breaks in the trip), then there's no reason why you shouldn't do it.
But if you're tempted just to get BA Gold, then remember that frequent flyer status is not an achievement or a badge of merit. It's fundamentally a tool and a package of benefits which are only worth something if you continue to fly during the validity of the status. If you're not going to keep flying a lot, you may never see much benefit from that status.
