Stolen or reported stolen/lost passport travel is common enough that it is a daily event and takes place multiple times a day. The actual numbers daily would be only an estimate, but this is a frequent means of travel by asylum seekers, economic illegal immigrants and others to start a new life or get their old life back. I'd estimate that it is easily no less than a 4-digit number daily.
I'm going to guess that there are about 30,000 international flights a day, not counting those between countries without borders, like within the Schengen zone. That means about 1 in every 30 international flights will have someone trying to use a stolen passport.
Given that it is this common, I don't think it is likely there was any connection.
