I believe they monitor the globe for seismic shock waves from explosions relating to possible detonations of nuclear weapons. How they could detect explosion or impact of an aircraft I'm not sure, and then determine the location of that explosion/impact. Perhaps they are now getting increasingly desperate to find the plane and are thinking outside the box for search methods.
