No disrespect intended, but I think filling voids in your checked bags is not the best way of preventing damage to your fragile valuables. The only correct solution is to never pack fragile valuables in your checked luggage. You're lucky the laptop only got cracked, and wasn't stolen by TSA.

Personally, I have found that the ideal way of dealing with excess space in my bag to buy a new, more appropriately sized bag. And I now have at least 12 B&R bags to show for it
