If you take the ferry, its a LONG drive down to the harbor, then the ferry to Penneshaw, then a long drive to SOL. We have been sveral times, and find that in the end its just faster to fly, let the Lodge ferry you around. I believe they do do 4WD rentals at the Lodge, and we think next time we might do that.
Be careful driving especially at dawn/dusk as there are suicidal marsupials hurling themselves onto the road.
