Apparently it isn't all
that odd, as it has been stated that most airlines and most national immigration services don't check against the Interpol database.

Then again, these people would have had to have visas to enter China, and it is equally mystifying to me that the Chinese authorities don't cross-check against Interpol's database either.
They had onward tickets to Europe and therefore did not require visas for China as they would have only been in transit there.
