A rather delusional libertarian view of the world, but reality is that passports are required because nations have a right to maintain their own sovereignty and determine who and who not to let into, or out of, their borders. As I posted above, the safe passage granted by a passport should include safety on many levels and it is not unreasonable to ask that my fellow passengers are who they purport to be and not be traveling under false identities.
