It's always been like this. The 'gate closing' has usually born little relation to reality in all the time I've been flying. It's why when it suddenly got enforced at LHR with the introduction of conformance, it had such a negative effect - everyone had known for years that the times on the BP were meaningless, and then, suddenly they were a big deal
