Of course, you're not intereseted in maximising mileage, since NZ status points on United Airlines is based on the distance of each segment (so you want to maximise segments). Status points also vary by the fare booking class (a letter, like G or K).

I've found that ironically, flying partner airlines is often a cheaper way to earn both status points and airpoints compared to flying AirNZ itself, particularly with flights that have multiple sectors.
Keep in mind however that the 'simple' new system for AP/SP earning will come into affect at the end of this month and as such the calculator at the link below will give you a count of the status points you will earn rather than the tables above:
