So Chase definitely has the ability to claw back miles. Whether it would do that on the retention offer, we like to get some data point. May be you would do it for the team?
Back in April 2012, my DW got 5K Avios from Chase to keep her BA card. She canceled ~6 weeks later & kept the points. (Sorry I don't have more recent data points. We almost always make retention calls, but our pattern on most Chase cards is to stop after earning the signup bonus, so we rarely get useful retention offers.)
