I would buy Silver: If you get enough segments in the first 90 days, you still will get Gold/Plat. For the first trip, why not just pay the baggage fee or FedEx it (depending which is cheapest). For $35, it's cheaper than buying an F ticket or higher status.

I can't comment on the upgrades out of DTW.
