I agree the staff should not have left the gate. They probably found out it was cancelled and bugged-out so as to avoid the angry mob. If I were looking for compensation I would focus on that as poor customer service.. They might throw you a bone. I haven't complained to ua in a while so I'm not sure how generous they are with compensation these days.
